The beloved cosmetics mecca Sephora has added a new feature to their website specifically dedicated to women with naturally curly hair. The webpage helps you identify your unique curl pattern and suggests products based on your hair texture.
Other brands have already launched similar campaigns that embrace the curly hair movement. Earlier this year, Dove launched a #LoveYourCurls campaign video that aimed to help girls of all ages embrace their natural hair. The video also highlighted the hard facts about the self-esteem issues that often come along with having naturally curly hair.
I for one, a naturally curly haired mixed chick myself, am super stoked that big-named brands are hopping aboard the #LoveYourCurls bandwagon. For some reason there seems to be a negative connotation associated with the phrase “jumping on the bandwagon.” But when the bandwagon is embracing something that is long overdue, like positive cultural awareness and inclusiveness, then I for one say all aboard!
See, I grew up the 90’s, in the generation of flat iron city where we all thought styling our hair to look like we had just got caught in the rain was “cute.” Newsflash: it wasn’t. You couldn’t pay me to sport my naturally curly hair. No way! And to be honest, I’ve only just recently begun to really embrace my naturally curly hair. I still secretly believe that wearing my hair straight makes me look more "polished;" a stigma that I will slowly have to deactivate.
But, just as Dove’s campaign video alludes to, it really is easier to embrace your natural hair when everyone else around you is doing it too. It's the rare occasion when peer pressure is actually a good thing! So #thumbsup Sephora.
Here are my top three go-to tips for keeping your naturally curly hair popping:
1. PAT DON'T RUB!
We all love to wrap our hair in a towel after we get out of the shower to help soak of some of that extra moisture. But curls LOVE moisture! So pat your hair with the towel don't rub! This will help you keep your natural curl pattern in tact and help hold some of that moisture in.
2. MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE!
Curls love moisture! And curly hair tends to naturally be more dry. So find a leave in conditioner that works well with your curl pattern and give your curls what they're screaming for... MOISTURE! (I suggest putting a leave in conditioner on right after you get out of the shower when you're hair is still wet).
3. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T BRUSH!
Curls love to be free! ... So let them! The worst thing you can do when you have naturally curly hair is brush them. In fact, try not to touch them at all! If you must fuss with them, try raking them instead with a wide toothed comb just to help distribute your product. But after that, leave them alone to air dry. (This ensures the least amount of frizz possible, which is every curly head girl's mission: to fight the frizz).
Once your curls are completely dry, feel free to shake them, rake them and pump up the volume!
